[Product Usage] All About the Synoptophore and the Optometry Department

The term “optometry department” may be relatively unfamiliar in China. In the domestic context, when people experience blurred vision, they typically visit an “ophthalmology” clinic. Our company has been serving the ophthalmology field for several decades, and over the past decade, a new term has gradually come into public awareness: the “optometry clinic.”

It’s important to note that “optometry clinic” is not just a trendy term for ophthalmology; in essence, it is indeed distinct from ophthalmology, and in many countries abroad, the two are treated as entirely separate specialties. To put it in a more straightforward analogy: ophthalmology is like vehicle maintenance—fixing whatever’s broken, replacing worn‑out parts, and ensuring everything runs smoothly; whereas optometry is like a driving instructor, focused on your visual experience and helping you drive more efficiently.

Some well‑known eye conditions include cataracts, which result from lens opacification; astigmatism, an optical distortion caused primarily by corneal irregularity; glaucoma, which arises from abnormal intraocular pressure; and vision loss due to retinal hemorrhage or detachment. These are all standard ophthalmic disorders, managed entirely by the ophthalmology department, which determines whether medication, injections, or surgery are appropriate.

Meanwhile, other issues—such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, strabismus and amblyopia, and presbyopia—fall squarely within the realm of optometry. In particular, strabismus and amblyopia, which have come increasingly to the forefront in recent years, have received widespread attention in major hospitals, driven by a growing commitment to safeguarding children’s visual health. The rapid advancement of this field can arguably be regarded as the most significant transformation in Chinese ophthalmology over the past decade.

Amblyopia is widely recognized as a major ocular condition that severely compromises children’s visual health—without exception—and it is the leading cause of reduced binocular vision in children. According to conservative estimates based on data from Peking University Health Science Center, the prevalence of amblyopia among children is 3%, with approximately 90% of cases attributable to anisometropia and strabismus.

The insidious nature of amblyopia lies in three key factors: first, the affected eye may show no apparent organic pathology; second, if it is not promptly detected and screened, and if appropriate diagnosis and treatment are not initiated, the condition becomes virtually incurable once the critical period of visual development has passed; and third, the therapeutic process is highly repetitive, time‑consuming, and demanding. Taken together, these three points converge on one central issue: time. For children with amblyopia, every moment counts—early diagnosis and intervention are paramount. This is precisely why the strabismus and amblyopia department within an optometry clinic devotes substantial resources to screening and treatment.

Our company’s YZ23B synoptophore, a key instrument in the diagnosis and treatment of strabismus and amblyopia, has been continuously developed, refined, and upgraded over nearly two decades, achieving widespread adoption throughout China. Thanks to the dedicated overtime efforts of our manufacturing team and the tireless marketing initiatives of our sales staff, coupled with the growing emphasis on screening for strabismus and amblyopia at domestic ophthalmic hospitals, optometry clinics, and refraction centers, annual sales of the synoptophore have risen steadily over the past few years. According to incomplete statistics, this year’s sales have already surpassed 310 units, an increase of more than 20% compared to last year. Meanwhile, the domestically sponsored symposium on the diagnosis and treatment of strabismus and amblyopia—featuring the synoptophore—has been held for thirteen consecutive sessions, attracting a cumulative total of over 500 participants, thereby providing significant support for the device’s wider dissemination and market penetration.
In summary, thanks to the overall advancements in the fields of “strabismus and amblyopia” and “optometry” in recent years, synoptophores have gained greater recognition among hospitals and ophthalmologists, opening up expanded market opportunities. However, this has also led to a surge in competitors, making it increasingly urgent to maintain product quality and upgrade functionality. With opportunity comes challenge, and we remain committed to seizing these opportunities effectively.
